Slapdee: The Rise of a Zambian Hip-Hop Icon
Slapdee, born Mwila Musonda on April 27, is widely regarded as one of the pioneers and most influential figures in Zambian hip-hop. His journey into music began during his high school years, where he built a reputation through rap battles against fellow students. Winning recognition early on, Slapdee quickly realized that hip-hop could become more than just a passion—it could be a successful career.
His professional breakthrough started in 2006 after working on the song Asembe Isebenza, which caught the attention of promoter Sync, who identified him as a promising rising star. Although his debut album, which carried the same title, did not achieve major commercial success, it earned him significant radio airplay and helped establish his name within Zambia’s underground hip-hop scene.
Slapdee’s career reached new heights with the release of his second album, So-Che. The project featured hit songs such as Solola and Takwaba, both of which became fan favorites across the country. The success of the album elevated him to national stardom and confirmed what many music critics had already predicted—that Slapdee was destined to become one of Zambia’s biggest music stars.
Between 2007 and 2008, Slapdee became heavily involved in a highly publicized feud with singer Mampi. Despite the controversy, the period produced some of his most memorable music, including tracks like Nizee and Sunshila. Around the same time, he also formed a successful musical partnership with vocalist Sutu, releasing popular collaborations such as Kamba Che and Disposable.
Continuing his upward trajectory, Slapdee released his third studio album, Black na White, in 2009. The album received an overwhelming response from fans and further cemented his place at the top of the Zambian music industry. Songs like Golddigger, Fo’Shizy, and Chishinka became radio staples and showcased his versatility as an artist.
Beyond his lyrical talent, Slapdee also ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing his own record label, X.Y.Z Entertainment. Under the label, he expanded his creative control and began exploring music production and beat-making, proving his abilities extended far beyond rapping alone.
Slapdee’s lasting success can be attributed to his unique musical ear, exceptional songwriting ability, and deep understanding of what listeners connect with. Whether crafting catchy hooks, delivering sharp rap verses, or producing melodic bridges, he has consistently demonstrated versatility and creativity.
